How to choose snow boots

The easiest option is to visit Amazon or any other shoe seller website and choose the best rated cold weather booties. This is not the best way as you should always take your own weather into consideration. For example extreme cold weather boots are not the best choice in generally warmer weather. Also, none of the best rated boots from our test was suited for wide feet.

Best rated mens winter boots are ECCO Track Boots, Vasque Men’s Snowburban Ultradry Insulated Snow Boot and Baffin Men’s Wolf Snow Boot.

  1. Winter boot height should at least cover the ankle.

  2. Choose only quality materials like natural leather or nubuck.

  3. The boots should have good traction on snow and ice.

Soft rubber soles with large treads are the best shoes for walking on ice. The material gets better the softer the rubber is. The soles should be at least 1 cm /0.4 inches thick. Thick soft rubber soles will help keep your feet warm and your body safe in winter.

Not all rubber boots are good on ice as there are some sort of rubber that become stiff and slippery at low temperatures. So make sure you read the reviews before buying. The best boots for walking on ice and snow according to our research are Snowburban Ultradry Insulated Snow Boot by Vasque.

  4. The size should be a little bit larger in case you need a thick sock inside. If there is no room for air inside your shoes than your feet will get cold faster.

  5. Choose the right width. Narrow boots won’t fit if your feet are wide. Letters W/XW/2E/3E near the size number indicate that the boot is for wider feet. Measure your feet at home to get the sizing right.

Best men’s winter boots for wide feet are Rockport Men’s Elkhart Snow Boot and Merrell Men’s Moab Rover Waterproof Boot.

In case your boots are tight in some places but fit otherwise there is a good option to stretch your shoes by using a shoe stretcher and a stretch spray:

  6. Choose waterproof if the weather is mostly mild and wet. Some waterproof rubber won’t last in colder weather and get cracked.

Best waterproof boots: ECCO Men’s Track Gore-Tex Boots, Kamik Men’s Icebreaker Cold Weather Boot and Sorel Men’s 1964 Premium T Boot.

If snow boots doesn’t keep your feet dry in wet, heavy, or slushy weather use Sno Seal on them:
