Last updated June 14, 2021

Dress shoes look very nice and are mostly worn for formal events. Many people wear them daily and it becomes especially important that the shoes are durable and comfortable. Most dress shoes are made of leather. Shoes with rubber soles are far more durable than with the leather ones.

There are several types of men’s dress shoes available: oxfords, loafers, derbies and monk shoes. The difference between these types is mostly how they are laced. Loafers typically doesn’t have laces, oxfords have closed lacing and derbies have open lacing.

Care for leather dress shoes

After you have picked your dress shoes the first thing you should do is to give them proper care. Initial care includes treating the shoes with a wax or a special cream.

Leather shoes: use some wax or simple Kiwi shoe polish to protect the shoe before wearing.
Nubuck or suede: Make sure to protect the soft leather against moisture. If they get soaking wet or very dirty the leather may become damaged. Simple protectant spray is a must.
Patent leather: The shoes are shiny from the start, but you should also protect them from damages, scuffs and marks and preserve shine. Use lack cream or a milk conditioner. Remember to try the stuff out on a hidden part of a shoe first!

Remove scuffs and marks from shoes immediately.

Polish and apply special leather conditioner on your shoe regularly to prevent damage.

Dress shoes for back problems

If you are having problems with your back and standing for long times during day at the office than you should probably take a look at what shoes you are wearing. Make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes with the right foot support. Concrete floors are not a natural environment for your feet. Some cushioning will help you keeping your joints healthy.
