Best women’s shoes for flat feet

Last updated June 14, 2021

All women want to look good, but people with low arches or flat feet can’t wear all types of shoes. High heels are particularly difficult as they require a strong arch to be able to wear them.

There is a difference between flat feet and a low arch. If your foot is not naturally flat, but was deformed into a fallen arch, it may be fixed by wearing proper footwear!

Current research suggests that walking barefoot is particularly good for your feet. Walking barefoot activates additional lower-leg muscles and helps support your body weight. Same studies have shown that wearing foot supporting orthotics and inserts will also selectively activate foot muscles and help you support and even rebuild the arch.

If you have a low arch and feel discomfort it, is advisable to start with the lowest possible arch support and build it up gradually. Start wearing footwear with the lowest arch support and raise it gradually after several weeks. This is important in order for your feet to adjust and help you acclimatize to the feeling of wearing orthotics.

We recommend to split the period of building up the arch in 3 stages where you gradually raise your arch support until it’s middle or high and feels good.

Warning: this is not professional medical advice. Talk with your doctor or trainer to get professional help.

Stage 1. Low support

  1. The first thing we recommend you start with right now is to stop wearing shoes at home. Walk barefoot as much as possible. This will help strengthen your foot naturally. Remember that insoles and orthotics will activate only some of the muscles. The other ones will be activated during walking barefoot. The stronger your muscles, the better the result and the healthier is your body and feet.
  2. Throw out your flats. Flat shoes are very bad for your feet. If you like flat shoes you should at least choose the more comfortable ones with arch supports.
  3. Start wearing arch support to adjust the foot. You should try different insoles first. Samurai insoles or soft suede insoles are very good for beginners. There is also Barefootscience that has designed special adjustable strengthening insoles with many different arch support types.

  4. Start looking at the right shoes. As you are starting a journey of strengthening your feet you should choose footwear accordingly. Same as for kids open toe sandals, flip-flops and shoes with enough room for the inserts are best a this stage.
